The New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge September 2012 Score Interpretation Manual Grades 3 to 8 which is applicable to all the parents students and private tutors at all three Math Genie abacus math for kids schools in New Jersey in the United States of America, continues on to state the following, quote “The 2012 Science test consisted of multiple-choice and constructed-response items. The Science test, applicable to grades 4 and 8 only, was administered over a one-day period. Tables 4a–4c illustrate the total points possible on the New Jersey ASK 3–8, by content area cluster and grade. Each of these content area tests is described in more detail in the following sections. 1 Does not include administrative time. Table 3: Test Dates and Approximate Testing Times, Spring 2012 Grade Test Dates Testing Time1 (minutes). Language Arts Literacy (LAL). The Language Arts Literacy (LAL) test focuses on a student’s reading and writing knowledge and skills based on the New Jersey CCCS. The LAL score is reported in two content clusters: Reading (standard 3.1) and Writing (standard 3.2). Reading (3.1) Writing (3.2). Grades 3–8. Working with or Interpreting Text. Analyzing and Critiquing Text. Grades 3–5. Expository prompt. Speculative prompt. Grades 6–8. Explanatory prompt. Persuasive prompt. Reading. The Reading cluster of the test requires that students read passages selected from previously published work and respond to related multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The constructed-response questions are designed to measure a student’s comprehension of the reading selection/passage. Students are required to write their own response using examples and/or information from the reading. In 2012, New Jersey ASK 3–5 tests included three operational reading passages at each grade level. New Jersey ASK 6–8 tests include four operational reading passages per grade level. Reading passages included literature as well as informational or “everyday” reading selections from a wide array of sources and genres. Narrative Reading. Literature written primarily to tell a story. Selections from previously published works. 500–1,000 words in length (approximate). Informational Reading. Nonfiction text written to convey information. Selections from previously published materials. 400–900 words in length approximate). The Reading cluster targets the following skill areas: Working with/Interpreting Text and Analyzing/Critiquing Text. Working with/Interpreting Text involves strategies that interpret or reformulate meaning from text. Recognizing central idea or theme. Recognizing supporting details. Extrapolating information/following directions. Paraphrasing/retelling (vocabulary). Recognizing text organization. Recognizing a purpose for reading” end quote.
