Useful tool for civil engineers... start working on it at undergraduate level and mastering this would add weight to your resume. A BUILDING INFORMATION MODEL (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its lifecycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. Traditional building design was largely reliant upon 2D drawings. BIM extends this beyond 3D, augmenting the three primary spatial dimensions with time as the fourth dimension (4D) and cost as the fifth (5D) etc. BIM therefore covers more than just geometry. It also covers spatial relationships, light analysis, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components. Use of BIM goes beyond the planning and design phase of the project, extending throughout the building lifecycle, supporting processes including cost management, construction management, project management, facility operation. The BIM concept envisages virtual construction of a facility prior to its actual physical construction, in order to reduce uncertainty, improve safety, work out problems, and simulate and analyse potential impacts. https://youtube/watch?v=Do2Vm22OCm4
