Uthman ibn Affan (radiAllahu tala anhu) was of such character that he was known for his shyness, his haya. His humility. His generosity. His softness. Abu Saeed al Khudri narrated that he saw Rasulullah (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) raising his hands from the beginning of the night till the end of the night saying Ya Allah i am pleased with Uthman so be pleased with him. When he gave bayah to the Prophet (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) with his right hand he refused to ever use his right hand to touch his private parts again. Rasulullah (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) told his daughter Umm Khulthum (radiAllahu anha) that no man resembles him or her grandfather Ibrahim more than Uthman. Al Hasan (radiAllahu tala anhu) narrated that Uthman (radiAllahu tala anhu) was so modest that he would feel shy when changing his clothes behind closed doors. There was a time when the Messenger of Allah was at home and he was reclining sat down, part of his thigh was exposed, Abu Bakr came and spoke to him then left. Umar ibn Khattab came sat with him, spoke and left. Uthman then sought permission to enter and he came in, Rasulullah then sat up and covered himself and made sure he was proper, his wife Aisha (radiAllahu anha) then asked Ya Rasulullah we know my father and Umar are more virtuous than Uthman, how come when they came in you didnt sit up and fix yourself or anything like this so why did you so it when Uthman came? Rasulullah (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) then said Shouldnt i be ashamed or shy from a man who even the Angels are shy in his presence? Ruqayya (radiAllahu anha) the daughter of the messenger of Allah, was married to Uthman (radiAllahu tala anhu), on the day of Badr, she passed away. Abdullah his son was pecked by a bird on his face and got sick and passed away. He got so depressed that he would come to Salaah, but wouldnt talk to anyone, and when Rasulullah asked whats wrong, he said, the death of Ruqqaya, and my relationship with you has been severed by her death. The Messenger of Allah then said, Jibreel (alayhi salaam) came to me and said Allah has ordered you to marry my other daughter Umm Khulthum with the same dowry. Thats where he gets his nickname The Noorayn, The possessor of two lights. Six years later she passes away too and Uthman is once again sad. Rasulullah then said, Wallahi if I had 40 daughters i would marry each one of them to you until every single one of them passed and i had no daughters left. Thats how much Rasulullah loved Uthman. When Rasulullah passed people thought Uthman lost his ability to speak, thats how taken aback he was with the passing away of the Messenger of Allah. When Uthman was 82years old his house was besieged for 40days. He would fast during the day and pray Salaah during the night. He was forbidden water from the same well he had purchased for the sake of Allah, he was forbidden to pray in the same Masjid he payed for its expansion. He was forbidden food to eat. On the 40th night he had a dream where the Messenger of Allah (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him, Ya Uthman, the fast that you have been keeping for 40days, you will break that fast with us. His wife had said that Uthman was so happy and elated, he got out the Quran and started reciting, rebels came and struck him on his head with a piece of iron and blood began to pour from his head, and the first place the blood fell was on the Quran. On the verse Allah will suffice you against them... One of them were going to strike him with a sword when Uthman raised his hand high to protect his face and the sword cut off his hand, where Uthman said, Wallahi the hand you have just cut off, it was the first hand to write the Quran. They placed the sword on the stomach of Uthman and his wife came running and they cut off her finger, and then pierced his stomach and when Uthman passed away one of the rebels jumped onto his chest and stabbed him 6 times .. They then dragged him to the rubbish tip and said, No man can bury Uthman!. The wife of The Messenger of Allah, the widow of Rasulullah, Umm Habibah (radiAllahu anha, climbed onto the stairs of the Masjid of the Prophet (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) and said No! O rebels if you do not allow us to bury Uthman, I the wife of the Prophet, I the widow of the Prophet, I the beloved of the Prophet, I the mother of the believers will descend on to the streets of Madinah with my hair uncovered and i will bury Uthman myself! She knew the rebels wouldnt stand in her way. A Sahabah (forgotten the name again i apologise) said If Umm Habibah descended on to the streets with her hair uncovered Allah would have rained rocks from the sky!. The rebels allowed the body of Uthman to be buried by four people. Ali (radiAllahu anhu), Hasan (radiAllahu anhu), Husayn (radiAllahu anhu) and another Sahabah (cant remember the name). The rebels started throwing rocks at Uthman ibn Affan (radiAllahu tala anhu) body whilst it was taken to be buried. When Aisha (radiAllahu anha) came back from Hajj she saw the Quran where Uthmans blood fell and every single rebel died a terrible disastrous death. Hasan (radiAllahu anhu) had a dream and he said, I saw my grandfather standing by the Arsh of Allah and he was looking worried and this was the first time I had seen him worried, Abu Bakr came behind the Prophet and put his hand on his shoulder and Umar ibn Khattab came behind him and put his hand on Abu Bakrs shoulder, this was the day Uthman passed away, Uthman came and his face was full with blood and his head was in his hands and he said to the Prophet Ya Rasulullah ask these people for what sin did they butcher me like a cow. Hasan (radiAllahu anhu) said when Uthman said that, the Arsh of Allah started shaking and two streams of blood started flowing from His Arsh. On the Day of Judgement, many martyrs will come, for some martyrs Afghanistan will give witness, for some Palestine will give witness, for some Kashmir will give witness. For some Iraq will give witness. For some the Battle of Badr will give witness. For some the Battle of Uhud will give witness. But for Uthman (radiAllahu tala anhu), the Quran will give witness, cause he passed in front of the Quran! Everyone knows the 10th of Muharram Husayn (radiAllahu anhu) was murdered. He was deprived of water for 3days, but when Uthman (radiAllahu anhu) passed away he was deprived of water for 40days! The Prophet (Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said each and every Prophet will have a companion in Jannah, and my companion will be Uthman. Wallahi we complain when we go through hardship and when we are tested, and those before us were tested yet didnt complain.
