8th December in Japanese time is the day of [Perl Harbor Attack] in Japan. I watched a few TV document programs, recently. From Japanese point of view, the grief of Admiral Yamamoto after he had heard that Perl Harbor was attacked 2 hours before the declaration of war was handed to America in Washington and other Allied sides. [I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve]. It means Perl Harbor Attack turned out to be the biggest mistake. Besides, Japanese Navy (IJN) couldn’t attack and sink American aircraft carriers. That’s why Admiral Yamamoto had to plan Battle of Midway again to attack American CV, which ended the worst defeat of IJN. Why Japanese government especially Ministry of Foreign Affair couldn’t prepare document earlier and handed it earlier to The Allied Force? There were many reasons as far as I know. Even after Japanese fleets departed to Hawaii, the negotiation between Japan and USA was going on, and Yamamoto ordered, “Even after starting on a voyage, the negotiation would reach to the good agreements, all fleets must go back to Japan.” That’s one reason, why the declaration of war was overdue. And another possibility was that Japan waited for the best news from Germany in Europe. When Japan was about to attack Perl Harbor, German army came close, only 30 KM from Moscow. But on 6th December, German army stopped attacking Moscow and Soviet army began big offensive before Moscow. For my dear German friends, maybe Japan made the biggest mistake for not attacking Soviet from Eastern side. Actually Japanese Army (IJA) planned to attack Soviet from Eastern side, and Minister of Foreign Affair, Matsuoka expressed his opinion that IJA should attack Soviet with German army. But since IJA once had lost the Battles of Khalkhin Gol against Soviet army in summer of 1939, IJA gave up attacking Soviet. Then Hitler’s Germany had to fight against USA too, because of military treaty of Axis Powers. At this point, when Japan attacked Perl Harbor, it was the biggest loss for Nazi Germany. And maybe Japan was the worst partner for Nazi Germany. The movie [Tora, Tora, Tora!] was produced by American and Japanese directors. And first, the most famous Kurosawa Akira was the director of Japanese side. Then, Kurosawa demanded that for describing Japanese side clearly, the movie must include the story of German army in the Russian front too, because Japanese government and army were convinced Germany would win in Europe. But Hollywood managers rejected his demands. If movie also includes the European front, then running time would be longer than 4 hours, which is totally impossible. Then, Kurosawa was dismissed by Hollywood managers. After this scandal, Kurosawa suffered from depression of mentality, and he even tried to commit suicide. He said, “I dedicated myself to make this movie more than 3 years, but Hollywood wouldn’t understand my passion to this movie. I wanted to explain why Japan started impossible total war loud and clear. But Hollywood wanted only merchandise and money, how disappointing.” This episode is very famous among Kurowsawa fans.
