Is there a term for when a book or a movie has enthralled reaction shots that are supposed to make up for inability of the writers and actors to create a scene that is actually compelling? I call it the Finding Forrester fake-out based on the scene where Sean Connery starts reading from a notebook and after one sentence, the music kicks in and all we see are very impressed audience members. However, there is also the scene in The Goods where Jeremy Piven gives a this is America, damnit speech in order to convince the flight attendant to let him smoke on the plane - and everyone is totally won over by the trite argument.
