31 people have been killed and more than 90 injured in explosions at a market in northwest Chinas Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Chinese authorities are calling it a terrorist attack. President Xi Jinping has promised to severely punish the terrorists and spare no efforts in maintaining stability. The blast occurred this morning near an open market in the regional capital Urumqi. Witnesses say two cross-country vehicles driving from north to south ploughed into people in the market, and one of the vehicles exploded. An undetermined number of people were injured and rushed to hospital. Flames and heavy smoke filled the scene, now surrounded by a police cordon.
