My granddaughters were here for 2 weeks; one of them has multiple allergies. As I did a little research about food allergies, I learned that women of my age or older (and men too) are more likely to have a food allergy than children. Why? Because allergies are an over-reactive immune response, and as we age, our immune systems become more sensitive. What to do??? Food allergies are not fun--I know, for several years I suffered with a wheat/gluten allergy that created itchy legs and rash when I ate it. Today, though, with a little support from the plant world (aka herbs) I have no issues with allergies to food. It is simple, inexpensive, and all it takes is a little persistence. First, if you have any of the symptoms/issues related to candida (bloating, gassy, yeast infections, multiple uses of antibiotics) you should start with a candida cleanse. There are lots out there; I like using Pau d Arco and Black Walnut tea (1 cup taken 4 x a day for 6 days) while eliminating dairy, fruits, sugars of all kinds, flours and grains, and all processed foods for 30 days. On day 24, begin the 6 days of Pau d Arco and Black Walnut again. Follow this with taking liberally of pro-biotics (non-dairy, please!). This will eliminate the over-abundance of candida which can leave tiny perforations in the gut lining, allowing food particles to go into the bloodstream before they are properly broken down--your immune system goes nuts, and allergy is created. Second, to heal these tiny perforations, take Slippery Elm Powder in a 1:4 (by weight) combination with Licorice Root Powder. This can be capsulated, or I liked to throw it in the blender with a cup of almond milk and a cup of water, some stevia to sweeten, and a little vanilla for breakfast every day. Take this wonderful combination for 6 days a week, for 6 weeks. Take a week off and repeat if needed. Third and last, once the 6 weeks are over, begin introducing the allergen (assuming it is a whole, otherwise healthy food like fruit or whole grain) into your diet again. Each time you eat your allergen, take an herbal combination called Dr. Christophers Immuncalm which can be purchased from many healthfood stores or on the internet. Take several capsules, and wait to see if your reaction occurs. If you still feel a reaction, take some more Immuncalm. Repeat this process to train your immune system that this food is no longer a danger. This process, if followed, should heal most allergies. WARNING: This is not meant to be prescriptive or diagnostic! If you have life-threatening or life-long allergies, please, do not try this unless your health professional gives you the OK.
