With computers, application of mind also becomes secondary- as we get diverted with 100000000s customisation options for the document- style overcomes the urge for substance. And of course, hand correction in a computer printed document is a SACRILEGE. So one more printout please- one finally final final printout. And what about PRINTOUTS for PowerPoints! Ultimate insult to PowerPoint. Oh yes, computer has also created a devil called printer as its sidekick, which has a mind of its own. You can understand many mysteries of life, but not why your printer decides to sulk at the most inappropriate of times. And at these precise moments Bosses conveniently forget that they also have printers...... I am not even talking about horrors of back to back printing, photo colour matching, margin-mirroring, odd-even page printing, headers, footers etc. And funny thing is that even if you have hooked up more than one printer to your computer, all of them will start sulking together. Exactly at the Rahu-Kalam when the most important of the report/letter has to be spewed out. Printers sulking is contagious just like yawning. Maybe they are yawning at us- Chal Hat! On a serious note, technology per se can not change the culture of an organisation. Paper-more to paper-less office is a cultural change that has to be driven by the management- top management. Top management usually thrives on printouts of emails! So there goes paper-less office. By putting few computers in an organisation without creating the full ecosystem for paper-less office- and associated cultural change in the way of working, we will keep falling flat on our faces and our printers will keep on laughing.
